It is amazing how the lack of rain can change a wonderful place to watch birds in a wet environment. In February of this year there were lots of birds in the lagoon. As we head into October, there is still some water but very few birds are visiting this lagoon. We need some rain to fill it up and bring back the birds.
This poem was written fourteen years ago. The poem was my response to seeing the images of the World Trade Center and watching those searching with the hope of finding someone alive.
Search dogs were so helpful in this disaster. A wonderful training center is about to open in Santa Paula, CA. http://www.searchdogfoundation.org/
These dogs are often rescued themselves and partnered with first responders to find people buried alive in disasters.
